My Abandoned Grade School
With weeds
on the ball field,
no art hangs in windows,
I stare at deserted childhood,
gate locked.
Red balls
no longer bounce,
frayed tether balls are still -
our laughter's long gone with our song's
last verse.
I leave
the chain link fence
with no crossing guard there,
I drive to where the ice cream shop
still stands.
